About The Book

In this reimagined version of The Twelve Days of Christmas, winter wildlife is observed as the snow comes. What animals do you think you might see? Do you think bears will be included? Why or why not? The only way to find out is to read or sing along as animals watch their world get blanketed by gentle layers of snow.

Twelve Days of Winter: A Wildlife Celebration is the perfect book for a smooth transition from holiday madness to a peaceful new year. Kids will recognize the familiar tune from their December caroling but apply the new lyrics describing various woodland creatures with ease. Otters, foxes, beavers, and more delight in the winter wonderland on every page. Enjoy this new winter classic! -Mary Nguyen (Elementary Librarian/Kidlit Reviewer)

In art, my kinders and I read Twelve Days of Winter: A Wildlife Celebration by Sherri Maret and illustrated by Thomas Hilley. The kids loved this book! It was so much fun to listen to them recite the story with me. I personally LOVED the illustrations! -Joel Scholten (Reading Specialist/Art Teacher Omaha, Nebraska

Twelve Days of Winter is based on the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas, but presents a picture book story in which winter wildlife is featured as snow comes. As each animal reacts differently to a new day of winter, the evolving story features a fine display of animals who find different ways to cope with and celebrate the season. Thomas Hilley’s engaging animal illustrations will delight young picture book animal enthusiasts. -Midwest Book Review (November 2022) The Picturebook Shelf

As an Elementary School Librarian, I am always looking for books which will provide a great read aloud for students as well as a book which can be tied into different grade level curriculum.  This book is definitely a fun read aloud. It enables students to repeat the different animals as a new animal is added each day. It also enables you to tie in classroom curriculum by pairing it with nonfiction animal books, seasons, or environment/ecosystems. Children will also enjoy the colorful and beautiful artwork throughout the book. Don’t have time to do a full lesson due to class parties or weather-related delays? This is a book which could also just be used in the winter months when you are looking for a quick fun read aloud with your students. Any way you use it I am sure you and your students will enjoy it.

The Twelve Days of Winter by Sherri Maret is a delightful and engaging story that I recently read to my preschool class, and it was a hit! This charming picture book combines animal identification and number counting in a way that's both educational and fun for young readers. The repetitive nature of the story makes it an excellent tool for helping preschoolers practice counting and recognizing animals, all while keeping them entertained... I highly recommend Twelve Days of Winter for parents, teachers, and caregivers who want to make counting and animal identification exciting for young learners.
