About The Book

This companion to Twelve Days of Winter is another book to read or sing along with children. In this reimagined version of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” wildlife is observed during summer. The animals enjoy warmer weather, blooming flowers, and sunny days. Summer is also a busy time for animal parents who are wrangling their little ones. “On the first day of summer we looked around to see a black bear in an oak tree.”
Can you find a curious chipmunk watching other animals enjoying the summer?

I was already a fan of Sherri Maret’s Twelve Days of Winter book, and her Twelve Days of Summer is a wonderful way to get students interacting with a read aloud or to start off a science unit. There are so many animals or habits which could be explored in the book. Once again Thomas Hilley’s artwork is a wonderful addition to the story and the use of colors will keep students engaged.  Whether reading this with your own child at home or using it in the classroom, this book series is sure to be a winner. I am looking forward to their upcoming Twelve Days of Autumn.

I was excited to read Twelve Days of Summer by Sherri Maret, especially after my preschool class enjoyed her previous book, Twelve Days of Winter. This sequel brings a fresh burst of summer excitement, introducing new and delightful animals that captured the children's attention.

The story follows a similar format to its winter counterpart, but with a focus on summer themes and animals. My students were particularly enchanted by the vibrant illustrations, which were simply gorgeous. The children had so much fun spotting different animals hidden within the detailed artwork—an engaging element that kept them looking at each page longer. The mix of animals paired with their babies was a standout feature, and my students especially loved noticing these relationships. It sparked conversation about animal families and their care for one another.
Overall, Twelve Days of Summer is a charming, colorful, and educational book that kept my preschool class engaged. The beautiful illustrations and the inclusion of animal families made it a hit with the children. It’s a perfect addition to any classroom or home library.
