About the Book

From New York Times bestelling author of Departure 37 comes a thriller with a supernatural twist, a reunion decades in the making and a nightmare waiting to return...

Is blood thicker than water? When a DNA test reveals that Ivy Pendleton has a sister she never knew existed, it feels like an unexpected gift, and a chance to reclaim a missing piece of her family's past. Anna Winterthorn seems eager to connect, and before long, they are exchanging calls, photos, stories, and plans for a long-awaited meeting.

But from the moment Anna Winterthorn enters the Pendletons’ lives, something feels wrong.

Long-buried secrets begin to stir. Strange dreams and unsettling coincidences cast new light on a tragedy from Ivy’s childhood: a disaster in the remote White Mountains that left her orphaned and haunted by memories she has spent a lifetime trying to explain away.

What started as a joyful discovery slowly transforms into something darker, drawing Ivy toward a truth that has been waiting decades to emerge.

A haunting tale of family, identity, and the dangers hidden inside the stories we tell ourselves, where the greatest threat may come from those who share our blood...

Raves and Reviews

"Scott Carson has another winner on his hands with DEPARTURE 37, an unforgettable novel that very likely will be one of the best of 2025."

– Bookreporter

"Rollicking...part Cold War thriller, part Twilight Zone episode and part Stephen King-like yarn about regular people in extraordinary circumstances."

– The New York Times book review

“Scott Carson is one of those rare writers who can grab you on page one, dive deep into his characters, keep you breathless with suspense, and do it all with gorgeous, propulsive prose. The past mingles with the present and the frightening future of technology in DEPARTURE 37, as Carson deftly weaves history, espionage, and horror into something totally unique, and utterly enthralling.”

– Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of CLOSE YOUR EYES and COUNT TO 10

“Here's a time-travel story that's straight out of The Twilight Zone -- a coming-of-age novel filled with secret government conspiracies, Cold War intrigue, and missing nuclear weapons. Like Rod Serling and Richard Matheson, Scott Carson has a gift for making the most fantastical situations seem entirely plausible, and I was holding my breath throughout this novel's exhilarating sky-high climax.”

– Jason Rekulak, New York Times bestselling author

“If you loved THE TWILIGHT ZONE, this is for you. It's a mind-blower.”

– Stephen King, New York Times bestselling author

"DEPARTURE 37 is a rollicking, and at times terrifying, machup of the 20th and 21st century political, nuclear, and technological tensions and ambitions. It's smart, inventive, breathlessly paced, and most importantly, humane."

– Paul Tremblay, New York Times bestselling author of HORROR MOVIE and THE CABIN AT THE END OF THE WORLD

"In this striking thriller, Carson nimbly entwines a contemporary coming-of-age story with a tale of Cold War paranoia. It’s a winner."

– Publishers Weekly

"Wildly imaginative and genuinely, nailbitingly suspenseful."

– Booklist

“Carson, delivers a terrific blend of horror and espionage . . . frighteningly real.”

– Jeff Ayers, firstCLUE
