About the Book

A groundbreaking investigation by a pioneering researcher into the ways our biology drives connection, attachment, and healing—all powered by the amazing physiological processes of bio-behavioral synchrony.

We’ve all read about attachment types, love languages, and the scars trauma leaves in our body. But until now, we’ve had little idea what activates these central parts of our existence. The answers lie in the science of synchrony, a field which Ruth Feldman founded over three decades ago.

Synchrony connects us socially and biologically. When we coordinate our behavior with others, our hearts beat together, oxytocin is simultaneously released in our bodies, and our brain rhythms sync. Synchrony is the biological signature of the magic feeling we call “love.” That biological connection can reduce stress, help us face challenges, and build a sense of lasting resilience.

This groundbreaking book reveals how synchrony binds us together across the relationships we hold dear—with our parents, our children, friends, lovers, therapists, coworkers, and peers. Synchrony can even form bonds of empathy and care between former enemies. It helps us reduce stress, face challenges, find a sense of meaning, and build lasting resilience.

Throughout the book, you’ll find a wide variety of stories demonstrating how to practice synchrony in ways that enrich and repair your relationships, whether with your romantic partner, with your children as they grow older, or with an old friend. Dr. Ruth Feldman has developed proven interventions to build synchrony when it has been lost; among couples in deep conflict, between depressed mothers and their infants, among adversaries, and in communities fractured from trauma. When people learn to synchronize, new pathways to healing open.

“Synchronized will change how we understand love, attachment, and the profoundly biological nature of human connection. A breakthrough in understanding how our relationships shape us, and how connection itself can become a pathway toward healing disconnection and trauma."
—Dr. Nicole LePera, New York Times bestselling author of How To Do The Work

"Ruth Feldman takes one of the most mysterious human experiences — connecting with another person — and reveals its underlying biology. Drawing on decades of pioneering research, Synchronized shows how love and connection travel through touch, timing, hormones, and the alignment of two brains. The result is a fascinating new way to understand why relationships can wound us, heal us, and change who we are.”
- Daniel H. Pink, New York Times bestselling author of The Power of Regret

“Synchronized takes us on a journey into the deep ways we connect with one another, from friendships to parent-child relationships. This magnificent book shows us the powerful science illuminating the essential steps we need to take to live our most vibrant lives.”
Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., New York Times bestselling author The Whole-Brain Child

“Synchronized combines the cutting edge research coming out of this brilliant neuroscientist’s lab with decades of deep reflection about art, life, joy, loss, trauma, and the meaning of relationships as these relate to human flourishing. The result is a masterpiece.”
--Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, Ph.D., author of  Mothers and Others

“Ruth Feldman has pioneered the science of human connection, revealing synchrony as the mechanism that binds us together. Synchronized is engaging, wise, and deeply hopeful: synchrony can be learned and strengthened at any stage of life. In our disconnected world, this is an essential guide to the connections that heal us.”
--Richard J, Davidson, Ph.D., co-author, Born to Flourish

“Ruth Feldman founded a field called the 'science of synchrony’. In her important new book, she summarizes the pioneering research she has conducted over the past 30 years. Through her elegant studies of in-groups and out-groups, of parent-infant attachment, and of romantic relationships, she reveals the remarkable neural and hormonal basis of human connection.”
--Professor Sir Simon Baron-Cohen, Cambridge University

“With exceptional scientific depth and clarity, Ruth Feldman transforms our understanding of love, intimacy and even hatred from poetic ideals into biological processes embedded in brains, bodies, and behavior. Both authoritative and deeply humane, Synchronized is destined to become a landmark contribution to the science of human behavior.
