Cheating Death

Three-Time Presidential Secret Service Agent Lives to Tell You How

Foreword by John Clark

About The Book

Secret Service Special Agent Ken Valentine protected three sitting presidents, all while he and wife Sandra reared five children. In Cheating Death, he details his experiences and shares practical and inspirational advice on living your most abundant, victorious life.

“Everyone, and I mean everyone, will give you advice on which way to go with your life. Friends, acquaintances, classmates, teammates, your friends’ friends, family, teachers, counselors, and neighbors will nose into your business. They will want to help you with everything from how to dress, to how to act. They will tell you what and where to eat, where to go and what to do. Before you know it, your whole life will be planned out for you, by someone else. If you are susceptible to influencers, choose your influences wisely.

“Not all advisors, or advice, is equal. In fact, some of the advice coming your way courtesy of well-meaning friends or family may be downright awful. Truly wise and useful advice will come from very few. The world will give you the same crummy advice it gives everyone. “Get fame. Pursue fortune. More is better!” The world consistently perpetuates the lie, that fame and fortune will make you happy.

“The world lies. Fame and fortune will not fill the void in our heart that was designed to be occupied by Christ. Only God can fill that God-shaped space within us. The world keeps trying, and people keep following the siren-song down the wide path to happy destruction.

“Happy is hard to define. I have determined that Happy is an elusive place. All of the world’s unfulfilled and dissatisfied people will call you to the same wide path, life-plan they followed—and expect a different result? I challenge you to take the narrow road. I urge you to trust in the Lord in all your decision making.”

“This book is the real deal written by the real deal. I have seen Ken protect our president around the world, pass impossible legislation on Capitol Hill, and put handcuffs on dangerous, wanted sex offenders. Cheating Death is the natural extension of the extraordinary life of Ken Valentine. He will disarm you with his humility, win you with his genuineness, and motivate you to reach higher with a passion for truth and justice.”

Robbie Callaway, board member (past chair), Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation

“If I were the President of the United States, I’d want Ken Valentine to provide security for me. Ken is a man’s man. He’s fearless, decisive, and loyal. There’s no doubt in my mind he’d take a bullet for the President. Yet Ken is a loving husband, a tender father, and a gentle Christian. Cheating Death provides a captivating insider’s perspective of the challenges the Secret Service faces protecting our country’s most powerful leaders. More importantly, Ken reminds us of the need to protect our hearts, the dwelling place of the King of Kings who empowers us to conquer death in the end.”

Bob Russell, retired Senior Pastor, Southeast Christian Church, Louisville, KY

“Ken Valentine is the real deal. He is a man of integrity who practices what he preaches.

Cheating Death challenged me to evaluate how well my thoughts, words, and actions align with my core convictions, and it offers proven principles for living a truly fulfilling life. One of these is, ‘Friendships with a good foundation stand the tests of time and trials.’ That is so true, and I’m grateful Ken is one of those friends to me.”

Rick Beckwith, Young Life senior staff, consultant, coach, and author of What If It’s All True?

“Ken has been in the presence of the some of the most powerful leaders on the planet. This book demonstrates that closeness, but pales in comparison to his intimate relationship with the Creator of it all. Experience second hand his career journey but do not miss the overwhelmingly powerful message this book reveals.”

Terry R Tinsley, PhD, LPC, LMFT, NCC

“Leadership books are plentiful and continue to roll off the presses. The same is true with books addressing spiritual growth. Some even bring these two subjects together in a single volume. However, few do so in such a way that captivates the reader's attention with fascinating stories—often only revealed to the public in movies or novels—and with a pastoral fashion. In a creative, engaging, persuasive, and evocative manner, Ken Valentine does an excellent job helping us understand divine perspective, true priorities, and practical action steps for life change. Here you will find style, substance, conviction, and challenge. Cheating Death is a work difficult to put down—but once you have—it haunts you in a wonderful way!”

J. D. Payne, Ph.D., Professor of Christian Ministry, Samford University

“Very few people could talk more about Cheating Death than Ken Valentine. As a member of the US Secret Service he was trained to protect the lives of presidents and other high-profile leaders. He addresses two important questions: Has anyone ever cheated death and lived to prove it? And is it available to me? Ken examines the importance of faith, the need for preparation in life, and the dynamic of decision-making. You will enjoy his down-to-earth journey and practical insights on how to live an exciting and well-balanced family life.”
