Shiva Naipaul was the younger brother of Nobel Prize–winning author V.S. Naipaul. He attended the Queen’s Royal College and St. Mary’s College in Trinidad before emigrating to the UK after winning a scholarship to study Chinese at Oxford. He is the award-winning author of the novels Fireflies, The Chip-Chip Gatherers, and A Hot Country, as well as three works of nonfiction, North of South, Journey to Nowhere, and An Unfinished Journey. He died in 1985.
