Lucey Bowen

About The Author

Lucey Bowen is a writer, researcher, and cultural storyteller dedicated to bringing the life and work of artist Calvin Douglass, her art teacher at Vassar College, into fuller view. In The Invisible Art of Calvin Douglass, Bowen draws upon Douglass's own recollections, archival materials, original artworks, preparatory drawings, photographs, and extensive research to illuminate an artist whose work and story deserve a larger place in the history of American art.

The book grew from Douglass's own memories, which Bowen transcribed in the months before his death, and expands to examine the people, places, experiences, and creative forces that shaped his life. Through an artist's lens, it confronts racism, separation, and loss. More than an art monograph, it is an act of cultural preservation: an exploration of artistic identity, visibility, legacy, and what can be lost when an artist's story remains outside the established historical record.

Created with access to Douglass's work and estate materials, the book brings together biography, art, and historical context to introduce his remarkable creative legacy to a new generation. Through Bowen's work, Douglass emerges not simply as a rediscovered artist, but as a singular American voice whose story asks larger questions about who is remembered, who is overlooked, and who gets written into art history.
