About the Book

A multifaceted novel of suspense, intrigue, social injustice, and historical facts infused with Italian ambiance.

In Women of a Lesser God, Sophia Travato, now Jenco, returns with a new set of trials. Another Vatican scandal has forced the Curia’s hand to enact a coverup of historical proportions. As Sophia exposes the pope’s blatant depravity, she must concoct her own elaborate coverup in order to protect an illegally established family legacy. Travel across Europe and linger awhile with colorful characters on the streets of the bohemian Roman village of Trastevere. Feast your eyes on the brilliant Bougainvillea draping down the sides of homes. Taste the food, walk the ancient streets, and find refuge from the suspense in the gardens of the Zen Monastery, or experience Acqua Alta as raging waters flood the Calles and Venice’s piazzas. Then travel farther, across eastern Europe, to poverty-stricken Romania, where Sophia vows to protect Lauretta’s legacy. Women of a Lesser God exposes little-known historical events surrounding the Holocaust in Italy and current social injustices including the suppression of women.

Raves and Reviews

Women of a Lesser God drew me in with its vivid sense of place and its blend of suspense, politics, and human frailty. The descriptions of Venice, under an ominous full moon with the tides threatening to overwhelm the city, set the stage perfectly for the drama that follows. I especially enjoyed how the author balanced lush scenic detail with the taut danger of an international manhunt, particularly in the scenes involving Severino Poverelli. The portrayal of the Pope was also striking—haunted, conflicted, and very human, which gave the story unexpected depth. Layered symbolism, such as the butterflies in the Vatican gardens, lent the narrative a poetic edge. Overall, it’s a gripping novel with strong characters and a rich atmosphere that kept me turning the pages.
