About the Book

How the man behind gaming’s most iconic score helped build a billion-dollar empire—and was fired for it.

Marty O’Donnell dreamed of becoming a rock star. Instead, he ended up composing the iconic music for one of the most successful video games of all time, Halo.

As Bungie’s audio director and composer, Marty shaped the music for all five original Halo games. His scores became the soundtrack of a generation, woven into the childhood memories of millions of fans around the world.

Then, in 2014, he was abruptly and unceremoniously fired.

This is the unflinching inside story of Bungie’s meteoric rise and its slow, painful decline. It reveals how the company gradually abandoned the very creative talents who built its success, including Marty himself. Through personal experience and rare behind-the-scenes accounts, the book explores the inevitable tension between art and commerce: Why do corporations so often discard the very things that made them beloved? And how does an individual creative soul fight back against the slow erosion of passion by profit?

Raw, honest, and deeply human, this memoir is both a love letter to the creative process and a cautionary tale about what happens when business forgets its soul.

About the Authors

Marty O’Donnell earned his Master of Music Degree in Composition with honors from USC in 1981. He founded TotalAudio, a Chicago-based commercial music and sound production company, composing scores and jingles for clients including Flinstones Vitamins and Mr. Clean.

In 2000, shortly after joining Bungie as audio director and composer, Microsoft acquired the studio. Marty led audio and music for the groundbreaking Halo series, which achieved billions of plays and over 81 million units sold, earning numerous awards including Game Developers Choice, AIAS, and Rolling Stone’s Best Game Soundtrack.

In 2007, he helped guide Bungie’s independence and contributed to Destiny, collaborating with Sir Paul McCartney on Music of the Spheres, recorded at Abbey Road Studios. He later co-founded Highwire Games in Seattle, releasing Golem (2019) for PlayStation VR.

Marty resides in Las Vegas. He and his wife have been married since 1977 and have two daughters and three grandsons.
