About the Book
All aboard! The morning train is bustling with passengers chatting, laughing, and telling their favorite jokes—until a great green crocodile squeezes into the car. Everyone grumbles, but no one dares to say a word… except a tiny chick named Peep.
With a brave heart and gentle manners, Peep steps forward to talk to the newcomer—and discovers that the crocodile isn’t scary at all, just shy and kind. Together, they show the other passengers that when we treat others as we wish to be treated, amazing things can happen.
Told in lively rhyme with bright, whimsical illustrations, There’s a Crocodile on This Train! celebrates courage, empathy, and the Jewish teaching from Pirkei Avot (2:10): “May the honor of your fellow be as precious to you as your own honor.”
A perfect read-aloud for classrooms, family story time, or any journey that invites new friends along the way.

Starred Review: From cover to conclusion, this rhyming tale brings on the charm, along with an important lesson about not prejudging others based on fear. The story begins with a typical day on a train full of friendly animal riders. Then, a “giant green creature” boards the train and takes up so much space that the regular riders become cramped. However, no one is brave enough to approach the crocodile with a request to make more space—no one except a chick named Peep. Peep introduces himself, and soon the crocodile makes space on his stomach to accommodate the rest of the passengers. Together, they enjoy the remaining ride and hope to repeat the experience. Kurshan’s seamless translation of the Hebrew keeps the rhyming couplets natural and sweet. For example, “Now Peep took a deep breath, looked the beast in the face, / ‘Do you think you could give us a little more space?’” Trainin’s animal illustrations are full of expression, from a variety of cranky passengers to the huge but friendly crocodile with wide eyes and an even wider smile. In its own quirky way, this story aptly illustrates the universal value quoted from an ancient Jewish text called Pirkei Avot, or Ethics of Our Fathers: “Value the honor of others as much as you value your own.”

PreS-Gr 2–A train full of animals on their morning commute faces an unexpected challenge when a giant crocodile boards, stretches across the entire car, and promptly falls asleep. Packed in with no room to move, the passengers hesitate to approach. Finally, the smallest rider, a brave chick named Peep, steps forward. Peep discovers that the crocodile, Victor, is not fearsome at all but shy and eager to help. With a simple flip onto his back, he creates space for everyone, turning discomfort into camaraderie. The story delivers a clear, gentle message about openness, kindness, and the surprises that come from giving others a chance, even in uncomfortable situations. Trainin’s bold, bustling illustrations, packed with loose, energetic linework, capture the crowded chaos of the commute and brim with visual humor and tiny details that will reward those who linger on the pages.
VERDICT A warm, funny lesson on empathy and building community. Recommended for school and public library picture book collections.

The tenuous tightrope between respect and standing up for yourself is explored in this lively picture book about navigating confrontation. When a crocodile boards a train, pushing all the other animal passengers aside, everyone is too afraid to stand up to him. A tiny chick takes up the task, approaching the situation with respect and confidence—and finding that first impressions are not always correct. Crisp primary colors and sharp black lines further evoke the bustling feeling of a cluttered train car.
