About the Book
Potholm, a professor at Bowdoin and a prominent campaign consultant, here shares his insights into and enthusiasm for the democratic process. According to Potholm, the presidential election of 2000 revealed the strengths of our democratic system, not the weaknesses. What's more, it made for great entertainment. In The Delights of Democracy, Potholm shares his thoughts on why low voter turn-out is not exactly a bad thing, why Clinton was a good Republican president (that's right), how all political parties should be skilled in putting themselves in their opponents' position, how smart politicians can make use of public polling, how people who don't care about the abortion debate are the decisive group in votes on the issue, and more. Filled with examples from his behind-the-scenes political career, Potholm's book informs readers what Americans really mean when they call their country a democracy.

The Delights of Democracy: The Triumph of American Politics offers many delights for those who love politics. It’s provocative and entertaining—what we’ve come to expect from its author.
– Susan M. Collins, U. S. Senator
‘Delights’ indeed. What you have here is vintage Potholm—irreverent, funny, opinionated, and even occasionally right. There is real insight here, both about Maine and national politics, and there’s enough insider gossip to keep it interesting. Look, I had to pay a bundle for some of this advice; getting it for the price of this book is a steal. Enjoy, trust, verify.
– Angus S. King Jr., governor of Maine, 1995-2003
If you read this book, you will be a better-informed voter, with much more understanding of the behind-the-scenes processes that manipulate your opinions and votes. You might also be inspired to participate in the delights of democracy—as Potholm so aptly describes our country's system of politics and government.
– George Smith, Kennebec Journal
Not just fun to read, this bookwill give readers much to think about.
