About the Book

An intimate memoir exploring how love, loss, and family legacies shape the people we become—and the relationships we choose.

For fifteen years, Anuradda has carved out a profession. Of listening to people describe the life they imagined they would share with someone else. She has witnessed strangers reduce desire to a checklist, doubt molded to certainty, intrigue turn to hope, and a single forceful question: What do I actually need in a partner?

What she did not ask, at least not for a very long time, was what she herself needed.

Soft as Steel is the memoir behind the matchmaker. Treading between the private lives of her clients and the buried accounts of her own marriage and family, Gupta examines the inheritance of love: the habits we take on without notice and the expectations that settle into us long before we ever learn to question them. The book traces the skeletal architecture of relationships, and more so, the institution of marriage. The ways our parents’ quarrels and intimacies make up our own, how ambition disguises fear, how care can become control, and how grief alters the stories we tell ourselves about living and being.

Drawing on her years spent helping people choose one another, Gupta brings with her no formulas or guarantees. Instead, she turns her attentive gaze towards herself. Asking the author what genuine compatibility demands and why some relationships thrive while others barely survive.

It impinges on a premise repeatedly: our unending search for human connection and how far it goes. It is a tribute to those who loved before us, lived through us, and an invitation to ask what we have inherited. So that, one day, with enough honesty, we may decide what is ours to keep and what we can finally lay down.

About the Author

Anuradda Gupta is the Managing Director of ARMEIS Advisory and the founder of Vows for Eternity, a relationship advisory service that has worked with individuals and families across sixty-five countries.

For more than fifteen years, she has had a rare vantage point into the stories people rarely tell aloud: the search for love, the complexity of marriage, the ache of loss, and the relentless work of building a life with another person. Those conversations have shaped her understanding of relationships, marriage, and what it truly means to belong.

Anuradda is an alumna of Harvard Business School's Owner/President Management (OPM) Program. She is an Indian American who has lived in London, New York, and California for the past three decades. She now calls San Francisco home, where she lives with her husband, Anand, their twins, Mehr and Ishaan, and Clover, their Cavapoo.

Soft as Steel is her first book.
