About the Book

A darkly funny, high-concept thriller about chimp-human hybrids, a government cover-up, and the terrifying question of where “human” really ends.

In 2038, DC immigration lawyer Kerri King stumbles on a clandestine network of chimp-human hybrids: proof of a U.S.-sanctioned medical programme creating near-human test subjects with no rights. As Kerri and a woman pregnant with a hybrid child flee government agents, her investigation pulls them across Seattle, New York and Mexico. Fast-paced, darkly dystopian but shot through with wit, Schrödinger’s Ape is a literary science-fiction thriller that turns its gaze on the species barrier. What do we owe the “other” when the other is also, unmistakably, us?

About the Author

Kathleen Bryson is from Alaska and lives in North London. She is the author of three evolutionary non-fiction books and three previous novels, including Mush, reviewed by Mslexia as ‘stunningly good’; Girl on a Stick, praised by Ali Smith as ‘Sassy, clever, bright, dark, true and, most importantly, alive’; and The Stagtress, described by Kerri Sharp as ‘like a psychedelic Angela Carter for the 21st century’. She is also the writer-director of five underground feature films and the painter behind ten solo art exhibitions. Her work moves between fiction, evolutionary science, poetry, underground cinema, paintings, myth, animality, sexuality and deep time. She holds a doctorate in evolutionary anthropology from UCL and is currently an EU Postdoctoral Fellow investigating virtual reality. Her work as a screenwriter and director led to her selection for both the Berlinale Talent Campus and the B3 Biennial Talent Campus.
