About the Book

A practical guide to raising kids who can think for themselves in an AI world.

For your child, asking AI a question is as ordinary as asking Google was for you. Kids are already using it for homework, curiosity, and increasingly for advice. Most parents are learning what these tools are at the same time their kids are living in them.

Much of the conversation about AI and education has focused on schools and students, leaving out parents and caregivers. That matters, because most of the moments that shape a child's AI habits do not happen at school. They happen at home, when a child is stuck on an assignment, curious, rushed, lonely, or looking for an easy way out. Without a clear sense of what good use looks like, it is easy to end up as the "AI police," monitoring and restricting instead of helping kids learn to make good decisions when using technology.

Education leaders Warren Apel and Meghan Hargrave use their experience to help parents manage the issues AI is raising. Through realistic scenarios, current research, useful prompts, and practical next steps, Raising Generation AI answers the questions parents are already asking:
  • Should my child be using AI at all?
  • How is AI showing up in school and in the way children learn?
  • When can AI help my child learn, and when does it begin to do too much of the thinking for them?
  • What should I know if my child turns to AI for advice, friendship, or emotional support?
  • How do we navigate cheating, privacy, deepfakes, misinformation, and safety?
  • What should I be asking my child’s school about AI?

Raising Generation AI moves parents beyond fear and policing toward thoughtful guidance, stronger conversations, and healthy habits.
