About the Book
Everyone knows the story. Psyche, a beautiful mortal woman, betrays her mysterious husband Cupid by doing the one thing he told her not to do—look at his face. Cue divine heartbreak, impossible trials, and a very jealous Aphrodite. Traditionally, it’s a tale about trust, devotion, and the power of true love.
But let’s be honest. It is a little suspicious to ask your wife never to look at you.
In this fresh, irreverent retelling, Psyche’s curiosity is not a flaw, Cupid has a lot to answer for, and Aphrodite’s divine confidence may be hiding some very human insecurity. Narrated by Cupid and Aphrodite themselves, Psyche turns an ancient love story into a witty, modern, and unexpectedly tender romp through romance, self-discovery, and the spectacular messiness of the gods.
Charming, funny, and full of mythological drama, this is Cupid and Psyche as you’ve never seen them before.

Author's Note
For those of you looking for a faithful adaptation of Lucius Apuleius’s second-century myth of Cupid and Psyche, we’ll just get this out of the way: This is not it.
In fact, we probably should have titled the book Eros and Psyche in keeping with Greek nomenclature, but, sorry, Cupid is the better name. And that’s pretty much the rule of thumb that we used throughout the book. Of course, as you’ll find, this is just the first of maybe a thousand anachronisms and idiosyncrasies in the pages that follow, but, for us, this wasn’t really the point.
Much like when you see The Matrix for the first time, and you realize, “Oh, this is where all of the references come from,” the Greek and Roman myths are the origin for the bones of most of the stories you love. The stories are timeless. They have endured millennia because they reveal something true about human nature: The Iliad shows us that people will burn everything down for love, while the Odyssey maintains that love can endure through years of challenge and change. Oedipus Rex demonstrates that, well, shit happens, and even with your best efforts, love can be pretty messed up. The stories have been told and retold countless times. So, what on earth (or Olympus) could we possibly add?
When setting out to retell these myths from the point of view of the goddesses, we mainly wanted to be able to live in the world of our favorite stories for a little bit longer. And we just found them so funny. How would anyone, let alone Hera, react to her husband turning himself into a golden shower to conduct a particularly creative extramarital affair? Is Aphrodite touchy about being the oldest goddess in Olympus? What are you supposed to do when you are the king of Crete and your wife has developed an insatiable horniness for the bull you forgot to sacrifice?!
In our retelling, we aimed to honor the heart of the story while also poking fun at just how insane and imaginative storytellers have always been. We decided to start with Psyche’s story because it has been a favorite for a long time. In telling the story to friends over drinks or to siblings who couldn’t fall asleep, the narrative changed with our voices. It became a little more “ours” when we wondered what Psyche would have said as a reasonable protagonist faced with truly impossible obstacles. After all that and despite our sweeping liberties, we hope what remains is a story that poses very real questions about love in its many forms. Mostly, though, we hope it will make you laugh.

“I’ve never laughed so much at a story so old.” —Sam Reich, Dropout
"Bourgeois and Brown's power is so great that they belong atop Mount Olympus, peering down on us mere mortals, occasionally offering divine gifts like this perfect book." —Asher Perlman, Comedian and Writer
"As a person who convinced her high school to let her take Latin and Homeric Greek in lieu of physics or calculus, I can confirm that this feminist retelling of a classical classic is essential, hilarious, and spot-on. What I cannot confirm: anything pertaining to math or science." —Emma Allen, Cartoon Editor, The New Yorker
“Divine, decadent and a downright riot, Psyche is a seminal text for anyone who might be mad at Cupid right now." —Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell, author and illustrator of The Joy of Snacking and Murder Book
"Psyche is a masterclass in both comics and retelling of Greek mythology for a modern audience. I dare anyone to try and put this down once they've opened it." —Ellis Rosen, cartoonist, author, and illustrator
"Hilarious, irreverent, and sublimely engrossing, the Gods and mortals of Bourgeois and Brown's Psyche sneak into your heart and dance off the page (at some points, literally) all while evoking the depth and detail of Greek myths you may recognize or learn about for the first time. The fresh dialogue and contemporary humor make these epic stories ever-relatable. A truly entertaining, educating, and beautiful feast for eyes and mind." —Amy Kurzweil, author of Artificial: A Love Story
"The myth of Psyche and Cupid is about as old as time, and for good reason: it’s got love, betrayal, jealousy, impossible tasks, and life-or-death stakes! But until very recently, it was also a dusty old tale I was forced to learn in school, so it took Bourgeois and Brown’s electrifying new telling of it for me to really relish and enjoy it. In their capable hands, this story is alive, and hilarious: these characters have weight, dreams, ambitions, flaws, tricks up their sleeves, fires in their loins, and twinkles in their eyes. I spent most of this book either mid-chortle or mid-gasp at Bourgeois’s stunning art. You’ll want to devour it, but go slowly: PSYCHE is a treat worth savoring." —Sofia Warren, author and illustrator of Radical and Film Nerds
