About the Book

Are Today’s Nonprofits Still Playing by the Rules?

Americans give billions to charitable organizations every year. Most never think to ask where that money actually goes. In Non-Profit For-Profit: The Untaxed Empire, Douglas J. Bystry draws on more than four decades in community development finance to examine how modern nonprofits have grown into major economic forces—shaping banking, healthcare, education, philanthropy, and public policy.

Readers will learn:
  • Why some of the nation’s largest nonprofits pay no taxes yet rival Fortune 500 companies in revenue and influence
  • How credit unions, hospital systems, universities, and donor-advised funds have evolved far beyond their original missions
  • What questions donors and taxpayers should be asking about nonprofit accountability and charitable giving
  • A practical four-step framework for evaluating any nonprofit before you give
  • Why nonprofit reform is overdue—and what a fairer system could look like

Non-Profit For-Profit: The Untaxed Empire is the book that asks the questions most people haven’t thought to ask—and gives them the tools to act on the answers.
