About the Book

After falling into a fantastical world where memory can be traded for magic, a boy must save his sister from a terrifying monster in this fast-paced and atmospheric illustrated middle grade fantasy adventure perfect for fans of Gregor the Overlander and The Whisperwicks.

Milo Huron has had enough. Enough of his dad, who walked out on them two years ago and seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Enough of his mom, who is working so much she’s almost never home. And, most of all, he has had enough of Aunt Irma, who is no fun at all and has basically locked Milo and his baby sister, Ella, inside all summer.

Aunt Irma is keeping secrets, and Milo is going to figure them out. Armed with pine sap, a butter-eating dog, and some good luck, Milo ventures into the mysterious swamp behind her house, where he has seen lights dancing at night. But then—a slip, a misstep, a give beneath his feet—he falls through the earth into a strange and dangerous world, where memories can be bought and sold for magic. Even worse, Ella has fallen in too, and she’s been captured by a terrible creature—the memory-hoarding Magpie.

With his memories, a mysterious sword, and some possibly treacherous companions at his side, Milo must undertake a series of trials to save Ella—or risk them both becoming monsters forever.

About the Illustrator

Nik Henderson (he/him) studied illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and has worked with clients such as DreamWorks Animation Television, Red Star Animation Studio, and on various pitch projects for animated productions. He has since been transitioning from animation into children’s illustration. Nik was born on an US Army base in Adana, Turkey, and grew up in Missouri on a small hobby farm, surrounded by chickens, goats, ducks, and horses. His summers and winter breaks were spent at an airport, where his father worked. Inspired by the hillside of the Ozarks and the aircraft he came to love, he began drawing and painting at a young age. Art quickly became a passion that led him to the world of illustration. Besides painting, Nik can be found writing, hiking, and scouring flea markets for antique cameras. He currently resides in Strafford, Missouri.
