About the Book
Grandpa Lewis is becoming more and more forgetful. He struggles to remember his past at sea, as well as his family in the present. His granddaughter Lou, who often spends time with him, wants to help him remember. That’s why she draws a giant lighthouse, filled with photos. There, she keeps the light shining, no matter what storms may come.
Lou’s grandpa has dementia, and she’s determined to love him well. A tender and touching picture book for everyone ages 6 years and up.
About the Illustrator
Julia Vasileva (1991) is a picture book creator living in Vancouver, British Columbia. From an early age she had an avid love of books and stories, which led to her getting a literature degree. After she immigrated to Canada in 2014, she found herself creating books instead of studying them. Her illustration style combines traditional and digital techniques to build imaginative worlds for children to dive into. She is a member of SCBWI and a recipient of the 2024 Don Freeman Award. If not in her studio, you can find her up in the mountains or down by the ocean.

Raves and Reviews
Little Lou adores her grandfather, who’s known and loved her since the day she was born. But he’s dealing with dementia; some days, he can’t remember the ends to the stories he started, “as if the vast deep sea has swallowed” his memories up. Lou finds ways to help trigger his recollections, but these don’t always work; she learns that patience and understanding are a part of loving someone who’s going through challenging times. In this tender, empathetic picture book, the textured illustrations pair pops of color with fuzzy elements evocative of fingerprint smudges and sponged ink to magnetic effect.
