About the Book
Discover how Johanna Spyri’s alpine childhood inspired her to create Heidi in this beautiful picture book biography published to celebrate Spyri's 200th birthday.
The whole world knows Heidi, one of the most popular children’s book characters ever. But who knows the woman who created her? The Swiss author Johanna Spyri led a life out of the spotlight. Yet she was considered one of the most important female writers of her time—and remains so to this day. In 2023, the Johanna Spyri and Heidi archives were added to UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” Register.
Swiss Heidi expert Katja Alves and Batchelder-award-winning translator Tammi Reichel tell the remarkable story of Johanna Spyri—through the voice of her famous heroine. Lotte Bräuning’s lush watercolor illustrations bring 19th-century alpine life and the city of Zürich alive. The result is this lovely picture book biography that belongs in every collection.
