About the Book

An intriguing and hilarious mystery about the ultimate literary scandal, in which the son of a world-famous author is faced with the dilemma of whether to publish his father’s final, unfinished work, which he had promised to destroy upon the his death.

Meet Dmitri Boris Godunov, son of Russian American literary giant Vladimir Godunov, whose rapturous, scandalous breakthrough novel secured its author’s place in the literary pantheon and continues to top banned book lists a half-century after publication. But when a forthcoming biography threatens to expose his father in monstrous ways, Dmitri must decide if he should publish the unfinished novel he had promised to destroy.

Loosely inspired by the true story of Vladimir Nabokov’s son, this twisty novel spans from New York to Russia to the Swiss Alps. Full of literary Easter eggs, I Swore I’d Burn This Book is both a feverish caper and a lyrical meditation on fathers and sons, our current times, and the mysteries of artistic creation.

Raves and Reviews

“Just as he transposed the ambitious wordsmithery of his hero James Joyce into something up-to-date and daring (in his debut, P), Conn in his long-awaited third novel now playfully drags Vladimir Nabokov into the 21st century’s culture wars. I swear you'll love this book.”

– Ed Park, author of Personal Days and Same Bed Different Dreams

“I highly recommend beginning this book on a day when you can ignore the rest of your life and joyfully succumb to its exuberant, ingenious, and wickedly funny charms.”

– Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeny, author of The Nest and Lake Effect: A Novel

“A rollicking romp through Nabokoviana with a delightfully reprehensible miscreant stealing the show!"

– Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story and Our Country Friends

“I had to pinch myself all the time that I was not reading Vladimir himself. This is a delicious tribute to the great man. He might have pretended to be disapproving. Which leaves us free to revel in this daring novel.”

– —David Thomson, author of A Sudden Flicker of Light and The New Biographical Dictionary of Film
