About the Book

For fans of Between Two Kingdoms, a first-of-its kind millennial memoir exploring a young woman’s radical act of living big even when life seems determined to make her feel small.

As a professional campaign strategist, Kayla Calkin has had a front-row seat to history. But in early 2022—when she is thirty-six, pregnant, and working toward planet-saving climate legislation—life throws her a devastating curveball: breast cancer.

Suddenly, Kayla’s world swings from political maneuvering and preparing for motherhood to chemo infusions. Between a drug trial, an IVF roller coaster, and a climate bill, her world spins out of control. A month into treatment, she grows ill with meningitis and finds herself fighting for her life in the ICU. Later, as she struggles to keep up with Congress as they try to pass the Inflation Reduction Act, her mental health teeters on the brink. But through it all, she strives to keep the promise she and her partner, Zac, made to each other: to live a big life.

Witty and deeply personal, I Never Wanted to Live a Small Life reveals the reality of a new generation of young adult cancers and the brutal, beautiful collision of health crises and work ambitions. Kayla initially thinks cancer will make her life smaller—but in the end, she discovers that it makes her life bigger in ways she never could have imagined.

About the Author

Kayla Yvonne Calkin holds a BA from Wellesley College and an MA from George Washington University. After college she joined the Hillary Clinton for President campaign in 2007 as an organizer—and she’s stayed on the campaign trail ever since. In 2018 she joined the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) as a federal campaign manager; in 2024 she took a leave of absence to become the Colorado State Director for the Harris-Walz campaign. Kayla lives in the City Park neighborhood in Denver, Colorado, with her long-term partner, Zac, their son, Locke, and a high-maintenance Westie named Lucy.

“When you get dumped at thirty-six into Cancerland, all the plans you have for your life—big or small—get thwarted. In this beautifully written memoir, millennial feminist Kayla Calkin brings us along on her journey to make her treatments, her ills, her loves, and desire for children fit into her hopes for a ‘big life.’ A must-read to understand what happens to a modern young woman with breast cancer, and why it matters.”—Susan M. Reverby, Professor Emerita in the History of Ideas and Women’s and Gender Studies, Wellesley College

“Kayla’s adventurous journey on her Big Life is an inspiring ride full of wigs and lumps, reflection and courage. She weaves her cancer journey with deep humility and honesty, and we at First Descents are so glad that we played a part in her incredible adventure to help her reclaim her identity.”—Alex Accetta, CEO of First Descents

“Kayla tells this story with so much honesty, humor, and heart. Her experiences with pregnancy loss, IVF, cancer, and the fight to hold on to the future she imagined are deeply personal, but they also speak to something much bigger: Everyone deserves the freedom to make decisions about their body, their family, and their life. Her resilience and refusal to let the hardest moments define the size of her future are inspiring.”—Mini Timmaraju, president and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All

“This deeply personal memoir follows Kayla’s fight to save her own life alongside her work at NRDC to help protect our planet. Her story is a powerful reminder that the toughest battles—whether personal or political—can feel overwhelming, but we can’t stop fighting. Kayla’s resilience, wit, and determination will inspire anyone who believes that hope and persistence can change lives.”—Gina McCarthy, former White House National Climate Advisor, US EPA Administrator, and NRDC president
