About the Book
A book that digs far beneath the surface of Gavin Newsom’s image to expose his actual record as governor of California, the state with the fourth-largest economy in the world.
Four eminent journalists and policy analysts teamed up to unearth what Newsom really did as the Golden State’s chief executive on crucial matters, including Economic Priorities, Public Health, and the Environment; “National Security” and International Relations; Criminal Justice; and Rights and Civil Liberties.

Raves and Reviews
“Behind his image as an audacious anti-Trump political leader, lies a far more complex political figure. Ranging from tax policy to foreign policy to healthcare, Governor Gavin Newsom emerges in Governor Newsom: The Untold Story as someone fast on progressive rhetoric, but inconsistent on implementation. Indeed, through this important book, the reader comes to see Newsom not as a progressive visionary, but someone trying desperately to restore and strengthen what could be called 'multi-cultural neoliberalism.' As a potential candidate for the presidency, this book helps to sweep aside the rhetoric and focuses, instead, on the actual practice, leaving it to the reader to draw their conclusions as to whether this is someone worthy of national office.”
– Bill Fletcher, Jr., trade unionist and author of “They’re Bankrupting Us!”: And 20 Other Myths about Unions
“Governor Newsom: The Untold Story arrives at a moment when democracy is under siege and the distance between political rhetoric and the exercise of power has become a matter of urgent public concern. Rigorous, deeply researched, and unafraid to challenge the polished narratives of political leadership, this important collection asks readers to judge power by what it does: whom it serves, whose suffering it ignores, and what forms of inequality it reproduces. In an age of rising authoritarianism, concentrated wealth, and the erosion of democratic institutions, this book makes a compelling case that democracy depends upon an informed public willing to look beyond political branding and hold power accountable. It is a timely and necessary intervention and should be read by everyone concerned about the fate and future of democracy.”
– Henry Giroux, McMaster University Chair Professor for Scholarship in the Public Interest, author of Assassins of Memory: Critical Pedagogy and the Politics of Erasure
“Too often liberal Democratic politicians like Newsom successfully pull the wool over voters’ eyes by positioning themselves as sensible alternatives to right-wing extremism. As this book so powerfully illustrates, Newsom is neither the far-left radical that the right paints him, nor is he the national savior that liberal pundits claim. The contributors to Governor Newsom: The Untold Story have mined Newsom’s political career so you don’t have to. Through painstaking research and careful analysis, they have done voters a great service as we seek an exit strategy from our dystopian era.”
– Sonali Kolhatkar, author, award-winning journalist, and host of Rising Up With Sonali
“An essential book for anyone who cares about politics and the future. Smart, fact based, eye opening! Read it, spread it.”
– Robert Greenwald, award-winning documentary filmmaker, founder and president of Brave New Films
“Meticulously researched, Governor Newsom: The Untold Story cuts through the fog of punditry and brings a much-needed reality check about a high-profile figure whose presence already looms large ahead of the next election cycle. Norman Solomon has assembled a top-notch team of journalists and policy analysts to produce a comprehensive record of Newsom’s vetoes, opinions, and decisions as California's chief executive. Fair and clear-eyed, the book will give voters much to consider as we go into the 2028 presidential campaign.”
– Karen Bernal, former chair of the California Democratic Party's Progressive Caucus
“Money media outlets cover Gavin Newsom plenty, but mostly, his clothing, coiffure, and celebrity clout. Luckily, Norman Solomon and his colleagues have provided a serious alternative: a clearly-written resource book that should be mandatory reading before 2028.”
– Laura Flanders, writer and broadcaster, host of Laura Flanders & Friends
“If you’re looking for a deep dive into Gavin Newsom’s record as he prepares to run for president, this should be your guide. Norman Solomon’s team has written five chapters that thoroughly document Newsom’s career and his shifting political views. This should be the book that journalists covering the campaign scour to guide their coverage.”
– Jeff Gottlieb, investigative journalist, winner of Pulitzer Prize and Polk Award with the Los Angeles Times and Polk Award with the San Jose Mercury News
