About the Book

Hardcover with sprayed edges. A fantastic, edge-of-your-seat ghost story from the ever-enthralling Catherine Cavendish.

“You don’t belong here. None of you do. None but us….”

1940. Pamela Courtney is evacuated to Chanterlands – the home of her aunts: Jilly, the eccentric one, who dreams of her days as a star of the silver screen, and Bunny, the pragmatic one.

But Chanterlands is home to more than just the living. There’s the spectral lonely boy whose room Pamela sleeps in and, in the long-neglected attic, she discovers a sinister secret of this once-great house. But greater danger awaits Pamela during that summer long ago when war raged all over Europe and the safety her mother had wished for her took a dark and fatal turn.

– JG Faherty, author of RAGMAN, THE WAKENING, and SINS OF THE FATHER

“Ghosts of Chanterlands captures everything I love about classic gothic horror. Reminiscent of The Woman in Black, it weaves an eerie haunted house mystery through generations of family tragedy and loss. Catherine Cavendish creates an atmosphere so vivid and unsettling that I felt as though I were wandering the shadowed corridors of Chanterlands myself. A beautifully crafted ghost story that is both chilling and deeply poignant.”

"Ghosts of Chanterlands is another winner of a novel, a terrific slice of gothic horror from the reigning queen of that particular subgenre. Fans of the author will find themselves quite at home in her spooky period piece and new readers may well find themselves bitten by the bug to seek out more. Readers who enjoyed Dark Observation or Those Who Dwell In Mordenhyrst Hall will find plenty to love here, and readers who haven’t yet encountered those works may well want to seek them out if they enjoy this one. Cavendish’s fiction is spooky, entertaining stuff."

– Considering Stories

"Ghosts of Chanterlands stands on the shoulders of Catherine Cavendish’s previous gothic work and reaches the next level. Two spinster aunts welcome 14-year-old Pamela to their countryside home for safety from 1940s war-torn London, but safety is an illusion as the aging estate draws her further into its secrets. Cavendish is a master at immersing us in the story’s time and world, while adding plot twists that keep us on the edge of our chairs. Engaging, haunting, and delightful!"

"In Ghosts of Chanterlands, virtuoso of gothic storytelling Catherine Cavendish sends her strong and sensitive young heroine Pamela to live in her aunts’ haunted house amidst the upheaval of World War II. It’s a novel brimming with stories of old Hollywood, family secrets, ghosts both benign and malevolent, and a beautiful English country landscape filled with magical flora and fauna. Immersive and unforgettable!"

"I’ll always shout about Catherine’s work from the rooftops. Each one I read, I swear it’s my favorite… but then I revisit a past read or read her latest, and it’s the same case! My goodness, was this one wild. It got into my dreams, and it was present in my day-to-day as well. I was so nervous to see what was to come next that I hung on every page."
