About the Book

Tana French meets Ann Cleeves in this gritty, atmospheric crime novel about Levi, a slumlord’s son who becomes the prime suspect when a tenant disappears, leaving behind a dead body—and his tool bag.

Levi learned the rules early. His father made sure of that—sending him door to door to collect rent while he waited in the truck with a beer and a tire iron.
  1. Know the asshole
  2. Money upfront
  3. Never let a tenant fall behind
  4. Never get emotionally involved

Levi swore he’d never become his father. But now he’s a landlord to the city’s most desperate, clinging to the one property the mob hasn’t taken.

Patch the walls. Keep your head down. Follow the rules.

Then Jess moved in—and something cracked. Now she’s gone and a man is dead. And Levi can’t remember what happened the night it all fell apart.

With the police building their case against him, Levi has no choice but to hunt for the truth himself—uncovering who Jess really is, why she came into his life, and how far the people behind her disappearance will go to keep their secrets buried.

Drenched in its gritty Atlantic setting, the newest mystery from bestselling author and creator of CBC hits Republic of Doyle and Saint-Pierre Perry Chafe is a riveting tale perfect for readers of Tana French and Jo Nesbø.
