About the Book

Düdjom Lingpa's Visions of the Great Perfection gathers ten foundational works on Dzokchen—pure visions and teachings from the nineteenth-century Buddhist master Düdjom Lingpa alongside commentaries by his lineage heir Sera Khandro—now thoroughly revised and expanded in this new edition.

Düdjom Lingpa's Visions of the Great Perfection is a three-volume collection of ten core texts on Dzokchen, the Great Perfection—the pinnacle of view and practice in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Rather than treating enlightenment as a far-off goal, Dzokchen points directly to the mind's own already-present purity and clarity, offering those with sufficient dedication and single-pointed perseverance a swift path to complete awakening.

The texts collected here come from two extraordinary lineage holders. Düdjom Lingpa (1835–1904) was a terton, a master recognized in Tibetan Buddhism as capable of revealing new teachings from past masters. Three of the works translated here are his pure visions, revealed teachings that arose directly within Düdjom Lingpa's own awareness through visionary encounters with the primordial buddha Samantabhadra in the form of the Lake-Born Vajra, together with his retinue of bodhisattvas. These are considered among the most potent and immediate forms of transmission in the Tibetan tradition. Five further texts record his teachings in his own voice as a realized master and visionary. The remaining two are commentaries by the visionary yogini Sera Khandro (1892–1940), who received these instructions directly from Düdjom Lingpa’s son and successor and became a great treasure revealer in her own right.

Together, these ten texts form one of the most complete presentations of the Dzokchen path available in English, moving from the foundational practices of samatha and vipasyana to the two practices unique to the Great Perfection: cutting through to the original purity of pristine awareness, and the direct crossing over to the spontaneous, effortless actualization of enlightened qualities. Vivid imagery, careful explanation of technical terms, and explicit guidance against common pitfalls make these profound teachings unusually accessible, while each text's distinct scope and emphasis lets readers approach the same path from multiple angles—ideal both for guided study and eventually sustained solitary practice.

Volume 1, Heart of the Great Perfection, gathers Düdjom Lingpa's most concentrated visionary and doctrinal statements, including two texts newly translated for this edition. Volume 2, Buddhahood Without Meditation, pairs Düdjom Lingpa's celebrated visionary account with Sera Khandro's commentaries. Volume 3, The Vajra Essence, offers his most expansive revealed work, tracing the entire path from the preliminary practices to buddhahood itself.

This revised edition features newly refined translations and introductions by B. Alan Wallace and Eva Natanya, and a new foreword by Chakung Jigme Wangdrak Rinpoche, a lineage holder and direct descendant of Düdjom Lingpa.

About the Authors

Düdjom Lingpa (1835–1904) was a Tibetan visionary, meditation master, and treasure revealer (terton) born in the Golok region of northeastern Tibet. Though he received no formal monastic education, he experienced visionary encounters with enlightened beings from early childhood and went on to reveal three cycles of pure-vision teachings on the Great Perfection as part of his twenty-one volumes of collected works. Düdjom Lingpa taught for decades as an itinerant, unaffiliated master before his death in 1904, after which he was recognized as having emanated, most notably, through His Holiness Düdjom Rinpoché (1904–87). His teachings continue to be transmitted today through the Düdjom Tersar lineage.

Sera Khandro (Dechen Dewé Dorjé, 1892–1940) was a Tibetan treasure revealer, teacher, and author who overcame severe hardship to become one of the foremost women teachers in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. After years of trial, she along with her root lama, Drime Ozer, Dudjom Lingpa's fifth son, realized the culmination of the Dzokchen path and revealed numerous treasures. After his death, she spent the rest of her life traveling and teaching throughout eastern Tibet, transmitting the treasures of Düdjom Lingpa and Drimé Ozer as well as her own revelations to many of the leading reincarnate lamas of her time.
