About the Book
Best known for her iconic role as Whitley in the '90s hit sitcom A Different World, Jasmine Guy grew up mixed in Atlanta, near Morehouse and Spelman, where her father taught philosophy. When she first encountered Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, her life was given a sense of purpose. At seventeen, she moved to New York, fulfilling her childhood dream of dancing with the company.
Dance would give way to acting, first on the Broadway stage, then on screen with Spike Lee's School Daze. When she accepted a part on A Different World, she had no way of knowing the impact it would have on its era, or that it would cement her status as one of the greatest stars of Black Hollywood of the '80s and '90s.
In A Different Girl, Guy, with the help of her daughter and confidante Imani Guy Duckette, offers an unflinching and heartfelt account of her rise to stardom. She reveals her battles with depression, her wavering self-image, her brushes with racism in Hollywood, and her lifelong yearning to create beautiful work. Along the way, she crosses paths with some of her generation’s greatest talents, including Whitney Houston, Debbie Allen, and Tupac Shakur.
Frank, unfiltered, and often laugh-out-loud funny, Guy shares her vulnerabilities and gifts in the hope that readers see themselves in her words. A Different Girl is a book for dancers, mixed kids, dreamers, and anyone who needs to hear her hopeful message.

Raves and Reviews
“If you are one of the devoted fans of A Different World who thinks Jasmine Guy is Whitley Gilbert, and vice versa, Miss Jasmine would like to set you straight. Her new memoir, A Different Girl, written in collaboration with her daughter Imani Guy Duckette (an artist in her own right), manages to be a love letter to show business and a cautionary tale for those who think that the path of success is ever an easy one, even for someone with the author's talent, determination, and beauty. She shares family stories, hard learned life lessons from her first days in New York City as a young dancer, as well as the highs and lows of building her legendary career. She even has some fun with her alter ego as she ‘interviews’ the one and only Whitley Gilbert about who brought who to the party. For those who know Jasmine, the fact that she is frank and funny and fabulous on the page is no surprise. For those meeting her as herself for the first time in these pages, get ready to meet, and love, a different girl.”

“Jasmine Guy has given us a soulful, searching, and beautifully written account of her life. A Different Girl bowled me over with its emotional honesty, as we watch Jasmine grapple with depression, sexism, and racism, while also offering so many surprising and inspiring laugh-out-loud moments. Jasmine is not only a remarkable talent, but a truly special human being and a beautiful mother. The love and connection between Jasmine and her daughter, Imani, bring another deeply moving dimension to this story. Their collaboration is a testament to the extraordinary bond between mothers and daughters. I can especially imagine mothers and daughters reading this book together and finding pieces of themselves, and of each other, in its pages.”

“A Different World was a cultural phenomenon and a top-rated situation comedy that changed the way kids looked at higher education and their own aspirations. Jasmine Guy, as Whitley Gilbert, was at the forefront of a movement that put HBCU's in the center of the conversation for children of color in America. This aspirational, high-octane biography written by Jasmine with her daughter, Imani Guy Duckette, the gifted artist and writer, is inspiring, hilarious, and wise. I couldn't put it down. A Different Girl is a family affair. As it should be.”
