About The Author

Peter Godman is one of the world's leading Vatican scholars, now at the University of Rome and formerly of the University of Tubingen. An atheist, he has nonetheless won admiration within the Vatican as well as the scholarly world for his monographs with Princeton and Oxford University Presses, and he was appointed by the Church as a founding member of the Committee for the Archives of the Holy Office. He has written a number of articles for scholarly journals and also published in The Atlantic Monthly.
