Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616) was born in Alcalá, near Madrid, Spain. Despite the contemporary and posthumous success of his masterpiece Don Quixote, often considered the first ‘modern’ novel, he spent much of his life in obscurity, captivity and poverty. He was also an accomplished short-story writer, poet and playwright.
