Jerry Siegel was a legendary American author and one the creators of the Superman comic book character, with Joe Shuster. In 1939, DC Comics agreed to publish Superman as a storyline in Action Comics. Superman appeared in the very first issue of this comic. After leaving DC Comics in late 1947, Siegel took freelance writing jobs for publishers including Marvel, Archie Comics and military magazines. Siegel and Shuster were inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1993. He died on January 28, 1996 at the age of 81.
