Q. What’s your greatest fear?

A. Anything terrible happening to my children - and I've written about that in 'Leaving the World'.

Q. Who is your favorite fictional hero?

A. Nick Carraway in F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby' - the eternal, discerning observer.

Q. If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?

A. I 'd love to play jazz piano.

Q. How would you describe perfect happiness?

A. Is there such a thing? Happiness, for me, is a moment here-and-there when everything that crowds your life drops away and you are simply aware of the pleasure of the moment.
Or perhaps it's walking Popham Beach near my house in Maine - and the most beautiful beach in New England - with
my two very wonderful children, Max and Amelia, on a winter's day when we had the entire three miles of sand to ourselves, and nothing really mattered except that we were all together on this extraordinary stretch of the Maine Coast.
