About Adrienne Maria Vrettos
Q. What is your birthdate?
Q. Previous occupations
A. In junior high I shelved books at our adorable town library. The librarians were *so* nice, but I think they started to get mad when I would go to shelve books and they would find me two hours later eating candy and reading Judy Blume in the teen section. Also, they told me I held the record for the most library cards issued and lost to a single person. I was then informed it wasn't something to be proud of. Also, since this has turned into the Adrienne Vrettos Library Confession Hour, I once 'borrowed' a Jane Fonda's Workout book without checking it out and returned it five years later because it felt like the Tell-Tale Heart in Legwarmers was taunting me from under my bed. I've also -- made a latte for Kate Winslet, saved a puppy from certain destruction on the way to a film set (which was really an abandoned prison in East LA), sold grilled cheese at a Dead show to pay for gas money home, and this one time I got whacked by the Soprano's. I was an office PA with an ear infection, which to my boss meant I was an office PA that ignored him when he asked me to do things. I couldn't hear him, I swear! Especially when my head was buried in the staff goodie cabinet, which was filled with Red Vines and cookies.
Q. Favorite job
A. Being a mom's the best job *ever*, but being a camp counselor is a very, very close second.
Q. High school and/or college
A. I went to high school at the Bromfield School in Harvard, MA. For college I went to UMASS Amherst, though I spent my junior year at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA
Q. Favorite movie
A. Coal Miner's Daughter or the Black Stallion or Superbad
Q. Favorite television show
A. I choose not to answer this question because I don't want to scare anyone with my freakish devotion to 'my stories'
Q. How would you describe your life in only 8 words?
A. Wait, only EIGHT words to describe my life?
Q. What is your motto or maxim?
A. Well, my motto is Be Here Now. But I've taking my new my main character's motto for a test drive. "I'm Gigi Lane and you wish you were me." I think it's really helping my confidence!
Q. What’s your greatest fear?
A. Just the thought of snakes makes me knees go all rubbery. Once I saw a show about anaconda hunters. These men go into swamps in their BARE FEET and feel around the squishy bottom until they step on a snake. And then they pick it up! On purpose! Terrible idea.
Q. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you choose to be?
A. I'm totally obsessed with (nerd alert!) this PBS series called Great Lodges of the Canadian Rockies. Sounds fascinating, right? It totally is! Anyway, I would like to be cuddled up in a snowy lodge with my family, drinking hot chocolate.
Q. What are your most overused words or phrases?
A. Dude, get out! That's awesome, I'm so stoked!
Q. What do you regret most?
A. I kissed a friend's boyfriend in high school. It was *not* a very girl friendly thing to do, and I still feel bad about it!
Q. If you could acquire any talent, what would it be?
A. would *love* to be able to sing. Have you ever read the book Bastard out of Carolina, by Dorothy Allison? If you haven't, you should, but it's for grown-ups and it deals with some really painful, intense stuff, but it is one of my favorite books in the whole world. Anyway, the main character, a girl named Bone, describes her wish to be able to sing in the most beautiful, heart-breaking way, where you can just feel inside of you how badly she wants it. It's a most perfect, crushing description of want.
Q. What trait is most noticeable about you?
A. My voice! I've been told it's perfect for both cartoons and naughty phone calls.
Q. Who is your favorite fictional hero?
A. Ramon Quimby (because it takes guts to be a little kid) Lyra Silvertongue (because it takes guts to be a little kid AND save the world)
Q. Who is your favorite fictional villain?
A. He Who Shall Not Be Named
Q. What is your biggest pet peeve?
A. People who make noises when they eat bananas.
Q. What is your favorite occupation, when you’re not writing?
A. Being a mom! I get paid in hugs and dance parties in the kitchen. Best job EVER!
Q. What’s your fantasy profession?
A. I LOVE LOVE LOVE being a writer but, if I were forced to chose another profession under penalty of having my pinkie toes nibbled off by mice, I would still choose writer. Who needs pinkie toes anyway? However, if I was forced to either choose another profession and never being able to watch Zoolander again, I'd choose....being a mountain rescue ranger! I'm not sure if that's exactly what they're called, but I'd like to dangle off cliffs while saving lost hikers, and I'd like to have a best friend that's a bear that helps me solve mountain rescue ranger crimes.
