Chapter One CHAPTER ONE
Tim had an incredible imagination. He closed his eyes, and suddenly it was as if his family was at the beach. It was a beautiful day, but then—a volcano erupted. It was exciting. It was terrifying. Hot lava spewed everywhere. Tim leaped into action, quickly rescuing Carol and Tina by moving them to safety. Then he went back to save Tabitha.
“Stay calm!” he told his daughter.
Tim was an expert in imaginary volcanos.
He turned his beach chair into a surfboard and rode the lava toward his daughter. Tim dodged and ducked and faced the danger with courage. Finally, the lava parted, allowing Tim’s surfboard to pass safely through. Tim ground to a halt in front of his very focused, no-nonsense daughter, Tabitha. The daydream ended.
“Dad, what are you doing?!” Tabitha didn’t have time for her dad’s wild imagination today. The volcano was a school science experiment with Mentos candy and soda. When mixed together, the Mentos would fizz into a massive foam.
Tabitha looked at the mess from the project. She knew she had to clean that up.
Tim still wanted to stay in the imaginary world. “Come on, this is the candy volcano of doom! You used to love it!” Clean up could wait. He wanted to get back to their pretend adventure.
Tabitha shook her head. “I’m trying to do my homework or I’m doomed.” She gathered her stack of books and left the room.
“Oh… okay…” Tim watched Tabitha walk away. He sighed. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you’re only a kid once. Once you grow up, you can never go back.”
