About The Book

The Third Book in the Horseshoer Mystery Series, Featuring the Incorrigible Female Horseshoer, Rainy Dale

Days before her wedding, Rainy Dale jumps at a chance to visit the fabled Black Bluff bull sale down in California, but things go awry when she is assaulted and her truck is stolen.

In this twist on the “locked-room” form, more than one mystery is hidden on the ranch where Rainy and her dog, Charlie, end up. Everyone—the owners, ranch hands, angry neighbors, and perhaps even the deliveryman who brings coke coal for the ranch’s old-fashioned forge—is harboring a damaging secret. When Rainy realizes that even her dog knows a grisly hidden truth, the stakes are raised as high as life and death.

Raves and Reviews

“A lively third outing for charmingly unpretentious Rainy Dale... This contemporary western mystery is a must for those who occasionally realize they prefer animals to most humans.”—Publishers Weekly

"Lisa Preston is the genuine article. Her prose is as sharp as aged cheddar and her dialogue crackles like an Oregon campfire. Her command of the idiosyncratic characters in Forging Fire is a match for Annie Proulx at her best."Brad Smith, Western Spur award-winning author of The Return of Kid Cooper
"A romp of a mystery no animal lover will want to miss. You'll love horseshoer Rainy Dale, but you'll love her dog Charley even more." —Paula Munier, USA Today bestselling author of the Mercy Carr mysteries.

“Rainy Dale is a lively, appealing one-of-a-kind. Dead Blow is great fun to read, partly because of the clever, quirky, twisty plot, but even more so because of the frequent peeks into Rainy’s clever, quirky, twisty mind.  May the series long continue.” —Aaron Elkins, Edgar Award–winning author of the Gideon Oliver mystery series

“Lisa Preston puts her own sharp edge on this fast-moving contemporary western thriller. Her heroine, young Rainy Dale, is a female horseshoer, as strong and passionate of mind as she is strong of back. When accidents in her central Oregon paradise don’t seem so accidental, and evil holds the whip hand as the bodies start piling up, Rainy proves that cold steel and hot iron are for deadlier deeds than shoeing horses.”—Bart Paul, author of See that My Grave is Kept Clean and others in the Tommy Smith High Country Noir series

“Preston’s background as a police officer, horse owner, and author of several nonfiction works about horses helps make the actions of her characters authentic and very believable.
