A. I love cooking and gardening. A savory dish where all the spices come together the way I wanted and a table full of flowers clipped from my own garden is a perfect day in my mind.

A. Epic writer sitting in an opulent study in the mountains, churning out masterpieces.

A. Some of my top favorites include Toni Morrison, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Paulo Coelho, Cormac McCarthy, Salman Rushdie, and William Faulkner.

A. Song of Solomon, The Alchemist, Blood Meridian, Brave New World, and 100 Years of Solitude

Q. Is there a book you love to reread?

A. I love to reread The Road by Cormac McCarthy.  The book’s message morphs depending on what the mind captures each time the story is read.

Q. Do you have one sentence of advice for new writers?

A. I always liked what Muhammad Ali had to say about perseverance and I think it’s true for writers: “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life a champion.”

Q. What comment do you hear most often from your readers?

A. Readers often tell me that my work is very vivid and image-driven, and that they can “see” what they read and feel like they are experiencing the “scene” with the characters.
