About Dana Gynther
Q. What is your birthdate?
Q. Previous occupations
A. Besides various stints at restaurants and shops, I have also been an au pair for a French family, an artist model, the Editorial Assistant for "Horizon" magazine, a cartoon voice (as the baddie's sidekick in a pilot episode that never saw the light of day), a translator, and a foreign language teacher, French to Americans and English to Spaniards.
Q. Favorite job
A. Writing! (Though I did have a lot of laughs when my best friends and I all worked at the same burger joint in High School).
Q. High school and/or college
A. Auburn High School (Auburn, Alabama). I got my BA (Political Science) and MA (French) at the University of Alabama, but also spent a year at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Q. Name of your favorite composer or music artist?
A. This is not one person, but an eclectic, accumulated jumble. I've loved the Beatles for as long as I can remember. Since I was a pre-teen Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. Since college, the Velvet Underground, REM, Patti Smith and Club Wig... Post-college, more European and world music.
Q. Favorite movie
A. I am sucker for Biblical epics like "Ben-Hur" and classroom dramas (ie, "To Sir With Love."), but perhaps my favorite movie of all time is "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Depardieu. I love almost anything with the Marx Brothers, Humphrey Bogart, and James Stewart... and I can't resist the charms of Indiana Jones.
Q. Favorite television show
A. DVDs have made watching series a real pleasure... or an addiction? "Deadwood," "The Wire" and "The Sopranos" are all favorites. And my all-time fave girl-hero, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
On Books and Writing
Q. Is there a book you love to reread?
A. As a parent, I have reread many of my favorite children's books (that I'd read over and over again as a child), and still really enjoy some of them now: "The Chronicles of Narnia" (except for "The Final Battle"), "James and the Giant Peach" and "The Patchwork Girl of Oz," for example. Have also loved discovering Harry Potter with my kids and have read those more than once.
